With so much excitement about big data, it can be difficult to discern hype from reality, but it is certain that the amount of big data in the world is skyrocketing.
Mobile devices are a major contributor to this information explosion as well as to the growing popularity of BYOD. There are currently 9 billion devices generating streams of big data for enterprises to extract profitable business intelligence. However, expanding collection of big data has come with security and privacy risks for business firms.
Many businesses are overwhelmed by the vast amounts of data, and a recent report by Oracle finds the situation will be compounded dramatically as an additional 40 billion mobile devices connect to the cyber world by the end of this decade. For the IT community at midsize firms, this exponential increase highlights the need for increased storage capacity and real-time analytics solutions to leverage big data for day-to-day business processes.
